Ingredient Diaries, Chapter 6: Fennel Seed

What is Fennel Seed

Fennel Seed is the dried seed of the Fennel plant, a flavorful and aromatic herb that's part of the carrot family (Apiaceae). It has a sweet, slightly licorice-like taste and is used both in cooking and traditional medicine. In India, Fennel Seed is commonly referred to as 'saunf' and has been used in Indian medicine for its digestive and other health benefits, and is also a popular spice in Indian cuisine.

Health Benefits and Uses of Fennel Seed

Fennel Seed presents several health benefits:

  • Natural Digestive Support: Fennel Seeds have long been used as a carminative—an agent that helps relieve gas and bloating. Research suggests that compounds like anethole, fenchone, and estragole help relax the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, easing symptoms like cramps, bloating, and gas
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Rich in antioxidant nutrients like vitamin C and plant flavonoids such as quercetin, Fennel in a concentrated form (Fennel Seed Extract) may help reduce inflammation
  • Hormone Harmony: Fennel has mild phytoestrogenic properties, which means it may help with hormonal balance—especially in women. Some studies have shown that Fennel Extract can be beneficial for easing menstrual symptoms and improving hormonal health naturally
  • Cardiovascular Health: Fennel Seeds contain nitrites, which can help dilate blood vessels, reducing stress on the heart and improving blood flow
